With nine years of experience I am a proficient VFX & CGI artist. I see this discipline as a visual-led endeavour which is mainly about the production of final quality animation and imagery, however it bleeds into areas of design as it provides me with the tools I need to visualise ideas rapidly and in high fidelity.
As a designer first and foremost, I normally use VFX & CGI as a tool for designing and visualising 3d environments, typically performing the role of concept designer or motion designer. I am heavily influenced by cinematographic techniques as oppose to graphic design, and the manipulation of lighting and creation of atmospherics is central to the environments I work on, so the tools of VFX & CGI, with their photorealism and high fidelity, are central to my process.
From the standpoint of a VFX pipeline used on larger projects such as animations and films, I am a 3d environment, look development and lighting artist, with additional animation skills in simulation. Lighting and atmospherics are the primary concerns, and any animation is usually directly concerned with these aspects of the environment.
