The Mill hosted leading figures from tech and advertising industries for a roundtable to discuss the future of experiential media. As part of the event, we created an immersive installation to fuel the conversation and showcase our capabilities. I was responsible for the concept design and art direction of the installation, spanning both the on-screen content and physical spatial design. The installation design was an exercise in marrying our experience of virtual worlds on screen with our visceral experience of real space. We arrived at the fundamental structure of a forced perspective video wall based on the hardware and site constraints, and the visual language developed from that point. The design began with previsualising the space to explore the lighting and atmospheric qualities, from which we started developing more art directed style frames that we could reorganise into a storyboard. The 3d environment, physical projections, and the surfaces of the screens themselves were all designed as elements of one mixed reality, which embraced the aesthetic of fragmented mosaics and the one point perspective. This presented us with spatial opportunities that we could use to form an abstract narrative around, using colour to elevate the experience into an emotional journey. Additionally, I was involved in the design of the wider event, helping concept and previsualise the guests’ experience, from receiving the invitation through to their taxi home, considering aspects such as the graphic design and craft of the invitations all the way to the lighting in the elevator.
