Extinction: The Facts was a primetime BBC documentary presented by David Attenborough. It covered the current scientific evidence on the the topic for a primetime audience, and sought to cut through the divisive discourse in the media with a balanced and authoritative tone. As a passionate advocate for the cause, I led a deep dive into the subject for our winning pitch at Compost, where we arrived at a sophisticated approach that presented scientific information in an entertaining yet unbiased way.

During production I went on to develop the design and lead the animation of all the graphics. We built on the approach we established in the pitch phase, designing simple, legible data-visualisations that were then captured in-camera digitally, using traditional cinematographic techniques to raise the production value without doctoring or over-designing the graphics. The intended result was for the data to hold up to scrutiny from both a scientifically literate audience and uninformed skeptics. Precise data-visualisations were made in collaboration with the scientists whose work was featured in the documentary, requiring first hand research into data sources, and making heavy use of javascript expressions and GIS & JSON data.
