Centred on the subject of the the Male Gaze, the feature documentary Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power, written and directed by Nina Menkes, became a long-lasting passion project. Premiering at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival, I co-led with pitch with the directors at Compost Creative in 2018, doing original forensic research into film shoots that contributed to Nina’s thesis - that the stylistic conventions in the way films are shot are central in reinforcing our misogynistic culture - and went on to develop the visual language and graphic identity for the production and larger campaign, including an educational talk entitled Sex and Power: The Visual Language of Oppression.
The house style we developed was described as an audio-spatial void, where mixed media and filmic artefacts could be deconstructed and analysed in 3d, and factual information could be present in a captivating way. This cinematic style was complemented by bold standalone satirical graphics that subverted conventional cinematic styles for impactful moments.
