As part of a larger series of films, I designed and animated a featurette about the pioneering but overlooked civil rights activist Pauli Murray, the subject of feature documentary My Name is Pauli Murray, produced by Amazon Prime. The film explored the concept of intersectionality, the idea that different social identities can overlap and produce both unique experiences and types of discrimination. The many different facets of Pauli Murray’s identity, including her race, class, sexuality and gender, which gave her a unique experience in the world, were represented by a prism of painterly vectors which collided and intersected, creating moments which exploded in full colour to illustrate key parts of her story.
